  What is ASTM A53 GR.B ERW Steel Pipe?

  ASTM A53 Grade B ERW steel pipe is a carbon steel pipe made by rolling steel coil into a round shape and welding the seam using high-frequency resistance welding.Grade B is the most commonly used grade because it provides better mechanical strength while still maintaining good weldability.

  Outside diameter: 1/2 inch to 24 inch

  Wall thickness: SCH 10 to SCH 160

  Chemical Composition of ASTM A53 Grade B

  The chemical composition is controlled to ensure strength and weldability:

  ASTM A53 ERW Pipe (Type E) and Manufacturing Requirements for Grade A & B

  ASTM A53 pipe includes three manufacturing types covering both Grade A and Grade B:

  Type F: furnace butt welded (Grade A only)

  Type E: electric resistance welded (ERW), available in Grade A and Grade B

  Type S: seamless steel pipe, available in Grade A and Grade B

  When different steel grades are continuously cast, the transition material must be clearly identified. The manufacturer should also remove this transition zone to avoid mixing grades during production.

  For ASTM A53 Grade B ERW pipe, the weld seam must be heat treated at a minimum of 1000°F (540°C) to ensure no untempered martensite remains in the weld area.If the pipe is cold expanded, the expansion ratio should not exceed 1.5% of the outside diameter.

  Note that Type F is not suitable for flanging applications. For coiling or severe cold bending, ASTM A106 Grade A is generally recommended, although A106 Grade B may also be used depending on manufacturing capability. Type E A53 pipe can be supplied either as non-expanded or cold-expanded depending on production requirements.

  ASTM A53 Grade B ERW steel pipe is a practical and economical carbon steel pipe widely used in construction, mechanical systems, and low-pressure fluid transport.
