ASTM A53 black steel pipe is made from carbon steel without galvanization. It has a dark oxide coating that offers natural corrosion resistance. It is widely used for gas lines, fire sprinkler systems, and structural purposes. Compared to galvanized pipes, black steel pipes are stronger and more cost-effective.

Black steel pipes have a variety of uses due to their high strength and minimal maintenance requirements. They are often used to transport natural gas and water to rural and urban areas, or as pipelines to protect electrical wires and transport high-pressure steam and air. Additionally, black steel pipes are used in the oil and petroleum industry to transport large quantities of oil through remote areas.

Other uses for black steel pipes include gas distribution inside and outside homes, water wells, and sewage systems. However, black steel pipes have never been used to transport drinking water because they are prone to corrosion in water, and minerals in the pipes can dissolve into the water and clog the pipes.
